confession is good for the soul

Confession the First:
I can't believe how much of my emotional energy is wrapped up right now in what happens with Amos and Edda in "9 Chickweed Lane". I mean, it's not like I go around obsessing about them all day. But I DO get really excited when 9:30 PDT hits and I can go read the next day's installment. And no, in case you wondered, I totally am not a nerd.

Confession the Second:
This one is all Kristen's fault. She told me about Statcounter and I signed up and now I have one more thing to make me need to stop every time I walk past the computer: I can check and see who's been coming to my site from where, and what weird google searches ("Rachel High Heels Discipline": you do not want to know) people have used to find me, and ack. Blog crack, is what that is.

Confession the Third:
I have not finished one single book this month. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH ME, CALL THE DOCTOR. (actually, it's that I've been crocheting, and I am not deft enough to read and crochet simultaneously like some people are. I can barely manage to watch a movie -- and boy have I been on an Austen/romantic comedy spree -- and crochet at the same time.) And I haven't found any really appealing books on CD at the library lately. Sometimes if I am still awake when I fall into bed, I pull out Mansfield Park and plow through a chapter or two. But that's it.

Confession the Fourth:
I took the Meyers-Briggs personality profile the other day, and the results showed my percentage leaning for each factor, and I came out almost exactly in the middle on every letter. I cannot even remember what I ended up with, it was that ambiguous. Does this mean that I have no personality? I am inclined to think so.

Rach, I just wanted someone else to share my addiction. ;-) That is interesting about your personality type; I am in the middle in at least a couple of them, but always am VERY skewed toward the "judging" rather than "perceiving." Ahem.

So hang on.... last time I read 9 Chickweed Lane Edda was in a Catholic school uniform. Obvisouly the characters have aged since then. But I just took a quick look and Amos and Edda are currently making out on the street and heading for and apartment, having been set up by two men who are obviously a committed gay couple. Isn't this the place where you're supposed to be declaring that they're undermining the family and are all going straight to hell?

And don't you love the politics that shove people into categories and declare that if you believe X you must also believe Y? /sarcasm off.

Too much of labelling people on both ends of the spectrum, I think. (I have a hunch that Edda's Catholic school upbringing will kick in and kick Amos out before things get too steamy, anyhow.)

[grin] Well, obviously I'm not nuts about the gay couple. And when I wrote the post Edda and Amos were doing the tango, they weren't kissing goodnight in Edda's apartment. I have always wanted them to get together, I've had a soft spot for the nerdy little Amos and hoped he'd get the girl, but I hope you're right about the Catholic-school background. ;)

It will kick in. See a few strips back where she has to call a nun to confess she said "cotton-pickin' ". (Because of the apostrophe.) I really like the gay couple - they're shown realistically (well, for a comic) and likeably without being militant. I wish comics.com had archives of more than 30 days.

I hadn't even realized that 9 Chickweed Lane characters aged - in fact I once answered a trivia question correctly on "what comic strips have characters who age in realtime, with "Gasoline Alley", "For Better or For Worse" (a favorite of mine), and "Baby Blues".

I don't think they actually age; I think their situations just change. Edda and Amos both took "early graduation" from the catholic school (?was Amos there? I can't remember now for sure) to move to New York, Edda to join a ballet company and Amos to go to Juillard. I think they're supposed to be eternally stuck somewhere between sixteen and nineteen.

Or maybe the author did a shift. I know Luann originally was going to be "thirteen forever" (the artist was the featured speaker/guest at a state spelling bee I was in in sixth grade, of all things), and at some point a few years later he apparently decided to make her sixteen forever instead.

ha! I was eighteen when I got engaged, nineteen when I got married. Really, really young by today's standards. It could happen, although I think he's going to end up having them separate again and start the romantic tension back up again.
