garden update and (cue Johnny Olson) A NEW CAR.

In case you don't follow the RSS feed for my Flickr photos (all the cool kids do) (*snort*), I should mention that every Tuesday (or thereabouts) I upload new pictures of the garden. I have a general garden set and a weekly garden photo set. The garden is getting really exciting. Something I planted actually has blossoms on it! Although we have had our first casualty. One of the "extra" tomato plants we put out (more seedlings than we had room for in the beds) was swiped by some gophers -- gophers with a death wish -- night before last. It's just gone, like it was never there. Granted, it was right next to the fence and it wasn't exactly thriving, but if the same thing starts happening to my squash plants I am going to sit out there all night myself with the .22. That actually sounds like a fabulous idea! We even have a spotlight. A diet Coke, a .22, the full moon, and thou ("thou" being a stupid little rodent who apparently doesn't know who he's messing with here).

Also, we're picking up a new car tonight; we signed papers for it on Sunday. I swear it's the frugal thing to do. The best mileage we can get on any of our classic Mopar daily drivers is 12mpg. TWELVE. That's highway MPG. At the current price ($4.50/gallon the last time I looked, but it may have gone up a dime), we can save almost the entire payment on our new (black, strippy model except for A/C because hello this IS California) Dodge Caliber in gas costs, especially since we get 500 gallons per year for three years at $2.99/gallon as part of that schmancy promotion thing that Dodge is doing. And from all accounts, gas prices are only going up. So it makes a lot of sense, right? Doesn't explain why I am having a total freakout about it. Well, not total. That was yesterday. Today it's only the occasional very small freakout.

Actually, it's seeming kind of... fun. I have never owned a new car before. And we got a really killer warranty, so that our usual main objection to new cars (things inevitably go wrong eventually, and they cost so much to fix, and T can't usually do it, and even if he could the parts are also outrageously expensive) is a moot point.

(Firefox thinks "freakout" isn't a word. Silly Firefox.)

Dodge Caliber? NO WAY. If they would've had those when I bought my car, we probably would've gotten one. As it was, at the time, all they had was the Magnum (which is/was AWESOME but out of our price range in the all-wheel drive).

LOVE. Love the new car. Such a neat car.

Congrats on your new car! I just sold my 1990 Pontiac Grand Am over Memorial Day and bought my first new car too! A silver Toyota 09 Matrix.
Love that new car smell! The windows work, the radio works, it doesn't drip oil, water doesn't leak into the car from wherever that leak was, the electrical system works, the engine doesn't try to overhead, the air conditioning works! all things I couldn't say about the Grand Am ......

Congrats to you all!

Can't you just plant a little crop near the fence for the gophers so they won't eat your stuff? Uh-oh, now I sound like a commie...Please don't name names ;-)

New cars are great. Love warranties. Love not having to do anything that gets me covered in grease, cut fingers or smashed foreheads.

So when are you coming to visit?

Posted by: jenn at June 12, 2008 12:38 PM

Jenn: Sure, I could plant a little crop near the fence. Then the gophers would bring their friends and they'd all have LOTS of babies and I'd have no garden a-tall. Although my cats would get really fat, and maybe they'd lay off eating the lizards for a while. Still, not worth the exchange, I'm thinking.

Visit: not in June, because we'll already have a long trip on that month's gas bill. Maybe late July, when hopefully our gas card thing will have arrived (it takes 6 weeks). Will your birthday party be too wild and crazy for me? You know what I'd really like to do is wander around the Getty with you.

Congratulations on the new car! :o) The gas deal sounds very helpful-- and the comfort of a warranty is worth a lot.

Now I need to go check out the latest garden photos, since all the cool kids are doing it. ;o) (Something's been attacking our tomato plants! I hope you'll have better luck.)

I would love to wander the Getty with you...We could go early to the museum and then hit the Villa and then have a bbq on the beach and walk around Big Sycamore beach till sunset.

My birthday is basically going to consist of dinner at a restaurant (Not sure where yet) and karaoke at a place where you can rent rooms like in China by the hour. Your own, private, karaoke suite.

I'm sure people will be bringing beer in (You can bring in whatever you want as long as it isn't illegal) but there won't be any craziness. The people I hang out with (When I hang out which is like never) are professional intellectuals who drink the occasional glass of wine if anything ever. Very kind, fun and funny people(Except Chrissy - she can get kinda crazy but I can handle her :-) Not that she isn't kind and fun and funny...You know what I mean. I hope she never reads this and takes it the wrong way.) This comment is getting totally email-esce.

After all that, if anyone is up for it, we might go to a bar that has live music because I've been jonsing for some live music.

You'd really like Andrea, she's sweet.

In other words, you are more than welcome to come to my birthday party. I'd love for you to meet some people. Put faces to the names and stuff.

I'll trade you gophers for our notorious Washington slugs. ;)

I sure miss good tomatoes. They simply do not grow well up here. I'll bet you can grow fabulous corn, too, ya meanie.

So? What's new? I'm jonsing for a post from you :-) And you never responded about my birthday.
