Am I a hippie?

Veronica did an awesome post about whether she's a hippie or not and I thought I'd do one too because I'm nothing if not a perpetuator of blog memes. Which this isn't. Yet. But maybe with MY HELP, it will be! Who knows? Ahem. To continue:

IS RACHEL A HIPPIE?

Pro:

I compost.
I have a vegetable garden that's bigger than my house.
I homeschool my kids.
I don't trust the government.
I breastfed my two children for a total of three and a half years, including one child who was old enough not only to ask for it by her own special name for it ("zurse!"), but who, one time when she asked to ZURSE and I told her she needed to eat something and asked (rhetorically, I thought) what she would like to eat, pondered for a second and then said, "A mambinger. And fwies."
I used cloth diapers with one of my kids.
If I wear skirts, which I usually don't, they must reach my ankles and give me adequate room to move.
I only wear makeup maybe fifteen times a year.
I hang my clothes on the line to dry.
My hair is long and straight, never hairsprayed, never blown dry. (Well, I cannot lie; in the year and a half I've lived in this house, I've used the blow dryer one time.)

Con:

My two-year-old daughter once asked for a mambinger and fwies. Come ON.
I eat meat every day, sometimes more than once.
My children are current on all their vaccinations.
I used disposable diapers with one of my kids.
I have never used recreational drugs.
I voted for Bush. Twice.
I remove excess unwanted body hair.
I am an ardent supporter of military veterans, military spending, military awesomeness, and generally of blowing up bad guys who try to kill us.
I also have a Gadsden flag flying in my front yard.
If I am going to protest about social policy, it's probable that the people against whom I am protesting will be hippies.
One of the many reasons I homeschool my kids is that I think the school system is too liberal.
I do not like tie-dye.
I do not care if my food is grown "organically", and I put that in quotes because I am really annoyed by the way a perfectly good word was co-opted by a food trend.
I really am much more Backwoods Home than Mother Earth News.
Reading Ronald Reagan quotes or, even more, watching footage of his speeches, makes me get all misty-eyed.
I am a really good shot with a rifle.
My favorite line from a Clint Eastwood movie is "Shut your face, hippie," and I think my kids could quote that before they knew their own middle names.

So the final verdict seems to be that I am an antihippie in hippie clothing. Why am I not surprised by this?

You know, I think if you combined us you'd get one complete hippie and one complete... well, whatever the alternative would be. I am the opposite of most things on both lists. That's really funny.

I am not a hippie. I just wrote an article for our newsletter at work entitled "Sustainability: It's not just for hippies anymore."

Did you make your own baby food? That would put you in the pro-hippie category.

You probably don't own any clothes made of hemp, so anti-hippie there.

Bra-wearing would be another one, but probably TMI.

Do you listen to hippie music? Drive a hippie car? Also, it appears that your husband has a job so that gets you right out of being a true hippie.

Mary: I did make my own baby food. No hemp clothes, I do wear a bra, I only like a little bit of hippie music and not because of the words, and I do not drive a hippie car. Also, my husband not only has a job but has worked at the same place for eighteen years and before THAT he was in the military. (He does work in a national park, which would be a pro point, but he's a techie and not in 'resource management' so that pretty much negates that.)

So there it is, more nails in the hippie coffin. :)

Between you and Michael, I am loving this "am I a hippie" thing. I think Michael had it right with "She'd rather people think of her simply as a frugal woman trying to do right by her family and God." That's kind of where I am with it.

Also, since your husband has worked for the same place for 18 years and that's the GOVERNMENT then that is yet another nail in the coffin.

I note that most of the stuff on the "hippie" list would apply to Old Order Amish and several other religious groups too. (Pretty mure the Amish aren't big militarists, into fast food or Clint Eastwood, but then I've never met one.)
